Sometimes It’s The Little Things… and Sometimes It Isn’t

Minutes ago, I was writing about my desire to use my writing ability to help other people, and within a few moments, my affirmation app, I AM, pinged me with an affirmation that read “I have the power to bring smiles to people’s faces.”

Cynics across the world, prepare to throw up on yourselves, because I took this little synchronicity as a sign that this path is real and important. How dare I put so much meaning behind such a “coincidence”? What cynics or the faithless struggle to comprehend is that for anyone building faith, there are literally NO coincidences.

That is the destructive power of faithlessness (i.e., cynicism). The human mind has powerful methods for removing meaning from moments of faith and instead giving credit to randomness. Humanity’s best answer to the question of God is what about all the suffering? Shouldn’t we believe in suffering as an explanation for the absence of God (or Good)? How could Good (or God) exist if there is so much suffering? The answer actually is yes, right, exactly.

Suffering is an expression of the absence of God (or Good), but only because humanity lacks so much faith in good (i.e., God) that we are severely lacking in generosity, goodwill toward others, humanitarianism, faith, healing, and good works. There is suffering and war not because Good (i.e. God) does not exist, but because humanity does not believe in God (or Good). The worst part about humanity is all the violent, selfish, mean-spirited acts that demonstrate our lack of faith.

Sometimes it’s the little things, like a perfectly timed affirmation, that builds faith. Sometimes it is bigger things, like the instant-karma reward of cutting off a terrible relationship, only to find out you landed your dream job the SAME DAY. Sometimes God doesn’t work in mysterious ways, sometimes the work God does is super-BLEEPING-obvious.

Good isn’t just going to snap Its fingers and cure homelessness. Homelessness is an expression of how far humanity has fallen, how selfish we have become, how little faith we have in each other and God (or Good). It is humanity’s constant expression of a lack of faith through suffering. And the only cure is for more believers in Good to stop waiting for God to do something about it and get to work on solving problems ourselves, because Good (or God) works through us, one act, one choice, one moment at a time.
